Director, Software Engineering – Loans Lifecycle

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in California, +4 more states.

📋 Description

• Establish the vision and drive the execution for the Loans Lifecycle engineering organization at Affirm, which includes the Loans Platform, Ledger Engineering, and Financial Reporting.

• Assume responsibility for core engineering and business outcomes within the domain, covering the loan system of record, ledger pipelines, and the delivery of financial data to accounting systems.

• Outline and implement the technical roadmap for service-oriented decomposition, platform scalability, and the evolution of database architecture to accommodate Affirm's increasing loan volume across various regions.

• Collaborate with Accounting, Finance, Capital Markets, Product, and Compliance teams to ensure financial accuracy and adherence to regulatory standards for all loan products.

• Balance efforts for product expansion — including international launches, new loan types, and card-related features — with foundational platform investments in reliability, accuracy, speed, and operational efficiency.

• Promote operational excellence across extensive batch pipelines and online services by establishing effective incident response, managing pipeline SLAs, and implementing reconciliation processes.

• Manage a comprehensive development lifecycle, fostering ongoing adoption and acceleration while enhancing a culture of operational excellence.

• Recruit, develop, and retain a high-performing, globally distributed engineering team across various sub-teams and technical disciplines.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 15 years of relevant experience in software engineering.

• More than 3 years of experience managing managers with a proven history of developing high-quality leaders.

• Experience in leading multiple engineering teams that encompass backend services and big data/batch pipelines.

• A successful history of driving key outcomes that contribute to the company's success.

• Comfortable collaborating across various disciplines and influencing a diverse range of leaders.

• Proven experience in hiring, nurturing, and retaining talent.

• Strong technical expertise in distributed systems, data-intensive applications, and scalable database architecture.

• Possesses domain knowledge in financial systems, lending, accounting, or fintech. Experience with ledger systems, loan origination and servicing, or financial reconciliation in a lending context is a plus.

• This role requires either equivalent practical experience or a Bachelor's degree in a related field.
