Director of ML Engineering, Conversation Product Area

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in New York.

📋 Description

• Lead the engineering execution and technical direction for the Conversation Product Area, which encompasses the Agent Engine, evaluation infrastructure, Search platform, AI Voice platform (Speak), and consumer agentic features.

• Co-direct the Product Area in a collaborative product/engineering framework, taking ownership of engineering while partnering on product strategy.

• Oversee a team of approximately 70 engineers, including Senior Engineering Managers and Staff/Principal engineers.

• Develop and maintain accountability for the engineering management layer across around nine teams.

• Drive the migration of existing agentic infrastructure to the shared Agent Engine.

• Own the technical strategy for Spotify’s first-party voice investment.

• Define and uphold the technical standards for evaluation, including feature-specific judges and datasets.

• Establish and enforce engineering quality benchmarks, including code review practices and test coverage for AI-assisted development.

• Engage with the broader leadership group on capacity management, project prioritization, communication principles, and engineering culture.

• Represent the Conversation Product Area in discussions at company-wide architecture and steering committee meetings.

⛳️ Requirements

• Extensive technical engineering leadership experience.

• Proven experience managing large engineering organizations through platform consolidations, migrations, or evolutions.

• Familiarity with at least two of the following: LLM-based agent systems and orchestration; evaluation infrastructure design; large-scale retrieval or search systems; speech/voice ML systems and production voice infrastructure.

• Experience in managing other managers.

• History of building strong, agile teams.

• Experience restructuring teams, reallocating resources, and adjusting to changing priorities while maintaining delivery momentum.

• Must be located in a time zone that allows for regular overlap with teams in Eastern North America and Central Europe.

• Should be able to work from an available Spotify office location within North America or EMEA.
