Director of Data Engineering

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Washington.

📋 Description

• Collaborate closely with the Director of Data to convert platform and data strategies into engineering execution, functioning as peers within the data organization.

• Maintain alignment of a high-performing data engineering team with best practices by establishing, promoting, and consistently reinforcing standards for modeling, transformation, testing, and documentation as the platform evolves.

• Offer strategic guidance and technical leadership to the data engineering team, defining and executing the data engineering roadmap in accordance with the broader business and data strategy.

• Serve as a hands-on leader, balancing approximately 50% management responsibilities with 50% individual contributions.

• Establish and uphold data architecture standards and best practices that guarantee the consistency, reliability, and maintainability of data pipelines and systems.

• Lead the design and execution of data models and schemas that facilitate integration and analysis across the platform.

• Architect and construct complex data systems, including large-scale data migration initiatives.

• Design, implement, and oversee data pipelines, ETL processes, and data warehousing solutions for efficient ingestion, transformation, and storage.

• Collaborate with the DevOps team to deploy new data prototypes and research and development initiatives.

• Debug and enhance long-running queries, optimizing pipelines for performance, scalability, and reliability across various data dimensions.

• Recruit, hire, onboard, and mentor a high-performing data engineering team, setting clear expectations, providing regular feedback, and conducting performance evaluations.

• Promote a collaborative and inclusive team environment that encourages professional growth and skill enhancement.

• Assess and choose technologies, tools, and platforms that improve data engineering capabilities and scalability.

• Work alongside data scientists, analysts, software engineers, and other stakeholders to convert data requirements into solutions that fulfill business needs.

• Partner with IT, security, and compliance teams to uphold data privacy, security, and compliance standards.

• Monitor and troubleshoot data engineering processes, addressing issues promptly.

• Keep abreast of industry trends and emerging technologies, fostering innovation and continuous improvement in processes, tools, and methodologies.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 8 years of experience in data engineering or a related field, including a minimum of 3 years in a leadership or management capacity.

• Bachelor’s degree or higher in Computer Science, Data Science, Information Technology, or a related discipline; a master’s degree is advantageous.

• Profound expertise in data pipeline design, ETL processes, data warehousing, and data integration.

• Advanced skills in SQL and Python; familiarity with R is a plus.

• Experience with cloud data platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP) and modern data warehouses (Redshift, BigQuery, Snowflake).

• Strong understanding of database systems, data modeling, and schema design.

• Demonstrated ability to manage complex projects and deliver high-quality results within deadlines.

• Exceptional leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills, capable of conveying technical decisions to both technical and non-technical audiences.

• Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, with a focus on innovation and continuous enhancement.
