This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.
• PostHog hosts a forum, a Discord server, a subreddit, a newsletter, and a wealth of content; however, user interactions are less frequent than desired. Forum traffic has been decreasing annually.
• You will be responsible for enhancing both the quantity and quality of discussions across all three platforms:
• Forum — characterized by slow, indexed depth. A concrete initial project involves updating outdated questions, clarifying the forum's purpose, and actively managing and initiating discussions. The decline in activity is not due to a lack of user interest, but rather a lack of maintenance and hosting efforts.
• Discord — a dynamic, real-time platform that is not indexed. Currently in beta; you will take full control and aim to meet the 20% Daily Active Users (DAU) default-alive benchmark. While we have yet to establish that Discord will be a sustainable asset for us in the long term, the size of similar companies' servers suggests it should be viable. If it fails to deliver, you will be the one to make that call.
• Reddit — a public and discoverable platform with a narrow focus: recruit enthusiastic community members to help manage the subreddit and lead significant events like AMAs, rather than daily management.
• Additionally, you will initiate discussions on central topics such as growth engineering, product design for engineers, and fundraising strategies for founders, while uncovering the strategic questions regarding the usage of each platform.
• Our community comprises founders who are fans, open-source contributors, event organizers, power users of the forum, leaders of builder groups, and customers engaged in interesting projects. Currently, there is no centralized record of these relationships, which depend on personal connections, and great customers are mentioned only once in case studies. You will create a system to identify, highlight, empower, and reward these individuals.
• A specific focus will be on maintaining a steady flow of engagement within the forum, fostering open-source contributions, and encouraging users to share their projects via chats and livestreams. Your goal will be to facilitate entry into these online spaces, acknowledge existing contributors meaningfully, and develop a reward system that extends beyond just a merged pull request. You will also handle potential negative incidents or breaches of guidelines that may arise.
• Collaborating closely with the in-person events team, you will bridge the gap between offline and online interactions (transforming builder groups into online regulars, and leveraging online discussions to inspire meetups), organize online "events," and explore opportunities for new community platforms (such as assessing whether creating our own social network would best serve these objectives).
• Proven experience in building or managing an online community where high-quality conversations thrive—whether that be a forum, Discord, Slack, or subreddit, your results are what matter.
• A current active user of PostHog. You should not just be "willing to learn"—you are actively using PostHog in your work today and have a sufficient understanding of the product to engage in credible technical discussions with any user.
• Experience as an active participant in developer communities, not just managing them from afar.
• Strong public writing and speaking skills, as you will set the conversational standard for users to aspire to.
• You should embody PostHog's values in your daily activities.
• Nice to have:
• Experience as an open-source software maintainer.
• Prior experience running a developer-focused program (such as champions, ambassadors, fellows, or hackathons).
• A history of building your own audience (whether through a newsletter, podcast, YouTube channel, or Twitter/X).
• Transparency:
• Autonomy:
• Shipping fast:
• Time for building:
• Ambition:
• Being weird:
