Director, Mobile Engineering

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in New York.

📋 Description

• Lead and expand a high-performing engineering team that encompasses mobile (iOS/Android) and backend, tasked with delivering top-tier, reliable products from start to finish.

• Develop and implement the engineering strategy for mobile and backend, ensuring alignment of technical initiatives with product and business goals.

• Oversee the overall technical architecture of the group — including mobile-backend integration, API design, and service architecture — to guarantee consistency and scalability throughout the stack.

• Establish and promote the adoption of engineering standards and processes (development, testing, CI/CD, observability, release management, code review).

• Collaborate closely with Product, Design, and AI teams to create scalable, customer-focused experiences across mobile and backend.

• Promote engineering excellence through architecture assessments, code quality assurance, operational best practices, and ongoing improvement among teams.

• Recruit, mentor, and develop engineering managers and senior engineers in both mobile and backend, nurturing a culture of ownership, collaboration, and accountability.

• Design secure, scalable APIs, backend services, and high-performance mobile solutions in an integrated manner, rather than treating them as separate efforts.

• Ensure that all applications and services adhere to the highest standards of security, privacy, reliability, accessibility, and performance.

• Lead the technical planning and execution of strategic projects, balancing innovation, scalability, and delivery speed across the group.

• Manage organizational growth, hiring, and the adoption of emerging technologies — including AI-powered capabilities — across both mobile and backend.

⛳️ Requirements

• 10+ years of professional software engineering experience, covering both mobile and backend/server-side development.

• 5+ years of experience leading engineering teams, including managing engineering managers and scaling organizations across various technical disciplines (mobile and backend).

• Extensive expertise in modern mobile development (Swift/SwiftUI and/or Kotlin/Jetpack Compose) alongside strong backend fundamentals — distributed systems, RESTful/GraphQL API design, databases, and service architecture.

• Proven experience in defining architecture and technical standards at an organizational level — not limited to a single discipline — and promoting their adoption across teams.

• Strong knowledge of authentication, networking, offline synchronization, mobile security, and application performance, in addition to backend scalability, reliability, and security practices.

• Experience in establishing engineering best practices (architecture, code review, testing, CI/CD, release management, observability) that are applicable across the entire engineering group.

• Demonstrated ability to influence cross-functional strategy and collaborate effectively with Product, Design, and executive leadership.

• Experience in recruiting, mentoring, and developing senior engineers and engineering managers across various disciplines.

• Excellent communication and organizational leadership capabilities, with a balance of technical depth and business impact.
