Commissioning Agent, Level 3

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in California.

📋 Description

• Oversee the commissioning process for MEP and DER projects with minimal oversight, from planning to acceptance and project closure.

• Create, uphold, and convey commissioning plans, schedules, testing strategies, and project-specific commissioning requirements to owners, design teams, contractors, and internal project teams.

• Evaluate the Owner’s Project Requirements, Basis of Design, drawings, specifications, submittals, control sequences, and shop drawings for commissioning-related concerns, constructability, operability, maintainability, and compliance with project objectives.

• Formulate and implement pre-functional checklists, functional testing procedures, and seasonal functional evaluations.

• Assess BAS trends, test results, equipment performance, and field observations to pinpoint deficiencies, root causes, and opportunities for enhancing system performance.

• Keep, communicate, and drive the resolution of commissioning issues logs.

• Collaborate with engineering, construction, subcontractor, controls, TAB, and operations teams to address technical challenges and ensure that installed systems align with design intent and owner specifications.

• Generate clear, technically precise reports, meeting notes, commissioning progress updates, and final commissioning documentation for both internal and external stakeholders.

• Perform Existing Building Commissioning investigations as necessary to enhance the operation of existing HVAC systems.

• Support post-installation performance tracking, utility program requirements, and Measurement and Verification obligations.

⛳️ Requirements

• A Bachelor’s degree in engineering, architecture, construction management, building science, energy management, or a related technical field, accompanied by 5 years of pertinent experience; or an Associate degree, technical degree, trade school, military technical training, or equivalent technical training with 10 years of relevant experience in troubleshooting, testing, commissioning, operating, or optimizing building MEP, controls, DER, TAB, or related systems.

• At least 5 years of experience delivering the commissioning process for commercial, institutional, industrial, utility, or similar MEP/building systems projects.

• Proven capability to lead commissioning activities with minimal supervision, including planning, document evaluation, field testing, issue resolution, client communication, and reporting.

• Proficient understanding of automation and control systems, HVAC systems, DER, plumbing, fire alarm/life safety systems, lighting and lighting controls, and test & balance procedures.

• Experience in holding teams accountable to processes.

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the capacity to convey technical findings to owners, contractors, engineers, and non-technical stakeholders.

• Demonstrated ability to manage multiple activities/projects simultaneously and possess outstanding organizational skills.

• Commissioning certification or the ability to obtain one within a year.

• Familiarity with M&V practices is preferred.

• Travel requirements may vary based on project mix and candidate’s location, potentially reaching 40%-60% on average.
