Associate User Experience Director – Freelance

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in New York.

📋 Description

• Lead UX strategy and direction across multiple concurrent projects, skillfully balancing strategic vision with hands-on execution.

• Work closely and seamlessly with visual and product designers to ensure that UX and design remain closely integrated throughout the workflow.

• Contribute to, uphold, and promote design systems—ensuring consistency, scalability, and adoption across various teams.

• Define and articulate user journeys, flows, interaction patterns, and key design decisions with clarity and rationale.

• Independently develop innovative solutions to complex challenges, responsibly introducing new patterns where current ones are inadequate.

• Synthesize research, data, and strategic insights into clear UX direction that can be easily understood and acted upon by cross-functional partners.

• Mentor and provide constructive feedback to junior UX practitioners, fostering quality and growth within the team.

• Collaborate with product, strategy, and technology leaders to ensure that experience decisions are informed by both user needs and business objectives.

• Communicate effectively with senior stakeholders on both the agency and client sides, presenting work with confidence and clarity.

• Contribute to continuously elevating the standards for UX, deliverables, and processes within the engagement.

• A strong portfolio showcasing distinctive work that demonstrates advanced UX skills across complex digital products or services, with clear evidence of systems thinking.

• Extensive expertise in design systems—actively contributing to, scaling, and advocating for them within multidisciplinary teams is essential.

• Experience in B2B environments—understanding the intricacies of enterprise users, workflows, and stakeholder complexities—is highly advantageous.

• Proficiency in Figma and relevant prototyping/collaboration tools (e.g., Miro, FigJam).

• Outstanding written, visual, and verbal communication skills; able to clearly articulate decisions and rationale to both technical and non-technical audiences.

• Highly collaborative; a natural ally to designers and cross-functional teammates who brings clarity without imposing hierarchy.

• Detail-oriented and focused on delivery, with the ability to manage workload independently in a fast-paced environment.

• Encourages progressive, limitless thinking while remaining practical about constraints and timelines.
