This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.
• Take charge of Rethink Priorities’ strategic approach to integrating AI within the organization.
• Suggest and prioritize AI investments while establishing the organizational trajectory.
• Design and implement thorough, decision-oriented evaluations of AI tools and workflows.
• Evaluate the impact of AI on quality, speed, and reliability.
• Identify trustworthy AI tasks and those that are not reliable.
• Develop and prototype agentic tools, plugins, MCP integrations, and lightweight internal applications.
• Collaborate with researchers and operational teams to comprehend workflows and pinpoint high-value AI use cases.
• Incorporate effective AI tools and workflows into everyday operations.
• Convert evaluation findings into guidance, policies, and training materials.
• Enhance the organization’s overall understanding of AI.
• Evaluate cybersecurity, data protection, and legal compliance risks related to AI tool usage.
• Document recommendations for the safe handling of AI tools.
• Stay informed on the rapidly changing AI landscape to ensure Rethink Priorities’ approach remains evidence-based.
• Report directly to Principal Research Director David Moss.
• Demonstrated strength in both thorough research judgment and technical fluency, with the ability to emphasize either area as needed.
• Skill in designing equitable, decision-relevant tests and adjusting direction based on outcomes.
• Practical experience with contemporary AI tools.
• Comfort with agentic coding tools like Claude Code.
• Capability to develop plugins and MCP integrations.
• Proficiency in writing scripts to extract functionalities from AI systems and assess them accurately.
• Self-motivated and experimental mindset.
• Ability to manage an ambiguous, rapidly evolving mandate without a predefined guide.
• Familiarity with effective-altruism-style research and the priorities of Rethink Priorities.
• Ability to thrive in a fully remote, globally distributed senior position.
• Professional proficiency in English is required.

• Nice-to-have: previous experience in AI enablement, evaluation, or applied AI/ML.
• Nice-to-have: background in software engineering or experience in developing internal tools.
• Nice-to-have: direct involvement in animal welfare, AI safety and strategy, global health and wellbeing, or general cause prioritization.

• Annual salary ranging from $132,986–$146,447 USD pre-tax for a full-time role.
