This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Act as the chief legal advisor to the CEO, executive leadership, and board regarding strategy, risks, regulatory updates, and sensitive legal issues.

• Collaborate closely with the policy team, offering legal guidance on EU and US regulatory matters such as DMA, DSA, EU AI Act, and US privacy laws.

• Oversee global privacy compliance, ensuring DuckDuckGo's products and practices remain ahead of GDPR, state privacy laws in the US, and evolving data protection requirements.

• Lead the company's legal strategy and manage outside counsel in intricate regulatory and competition matters that significantly impact DuckDuckGo’s business.

• Supervise and cultivate the legal team, establish priorities, create the legal operating framework, and foster team development.

• Collaborate with Product, Engineering, and Security teams on the legal implications of AI functionalities, new product releases, advertising formats, and data management practices.

• Enhance legal operations infrastructure, including intake processes, outside counsel management, budget responsibilities, and playbooks across key legal areas.

• Provide counsel on employment issues, intellectual property strategy, and corporate transactions as DuckDuckGo expands.

• Oversee corporate governance and facilitate strategic transactions, encompassing M&A and funding rounds.

• Engage in related projects.

⛳️ Requirements

• 15+ years of legal experience, with over 10 years in-house at a consumer-oriented technology firm.

• 7+ years of advancing legal leadership experience, including at least 2 years in roles of similar seniority (VP, Deputy General Counsel, etc.).

• Juris Doctor (JD) degree and active membership in the bar of at least one US jurisdiction.

• Knowledge of corporate governance and strategic transactions, including M&A, financing rounds, or board advisory roles, sufficient to take ownership of these matters as the company scales.

• Extensive expertise in at least two of DuckDuckGo's critical legal areas: privacy/data protection, technology platform regulation, or antitrust/competition law.

• Proven ability to advise executives on intricate legal risks and manage substantial litigation and regulatory matters.

• History of managing legal teams and outside counsel across various jurisdictions.

• Strong commercial acumen and a business facilitator recognized for sound judgment rather than excessive caution.
