
U.S. Tax Reviewer, Small Business Returns

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.
• Examine federal and relevant state tax returns prior to customer delivery or submission, including 1040, Schedule C, 1120, 1120-S, and 1065 forms.
• Ensure that returns are consistent with end-of-year financials, bookkeeping records, workpapers, previous year data, and documents provided by customers.
• Detect significant errors, inconsistencies, missing schedules, classification problems, unsupported positions, filing risks, and bookkeeping issues that need rectification prior to submission.
• Validate adjusting entries or request necessary corrections before the return is delivered to the customer or filed.
• Review returns that involve R&D credits / Form 6765 where applicable, assessing the reasonableness of inputs, documentation, and escalation requirements.
• Offer clear and actionable feedback to preparers, ensuring that all corrections are made before a return is sent to the customer or filed.
• Conduct or assist with draft review calls when a technical explanation is necessary, and communicate review findings in straightforward language.
• Verify that customer approval is well-informed and that the filing authorization corresponds with the appropriate return and year.
• Supervise returns during the review, client approval, and filing phases to prevent delays; respond swiftly to inquiries from both internal and external parties.
• Clearly document review findings, decisions, assumptions, unresolved risks, and follow-up items.
• Escalate advisory or complex technical matters to BenchTax Advisors only when essential, and monitor recurring preparer issues to foster quality enhancement.
• Valid IRS PTIN.
• Extensive experience in U.S. tax preparation and/or review.
• Strong knowledge of small business and entity-level tax matters.
• Capability to review 1040, Schedule C, 1120, 1120-S, and 1065 returns.
• Ability to pinpoint significant tax errors, bookkeeping discrepancies, unsupported positions, and filing risks, and to articulate corrections clearly.
• Strong analytical abilities, meticulous attention to detail, effective written and verbal communication skills, and discipline for remote work.
• Comfort in engaging directly with customers via phone or video when necessary, and explaining technical tax matters to non-tax professionals.
• Proficient computer skills and the ability to work efficiently across various systems in a remote setup.
• Independent ownership, promptness, and follow-through throughout the correction, approval, and filing process.
• Willingness to complete BenchTax’s written technical review evaluation.
• CPA or Enrolled Agent designation is highly preferred.
• Experience with Big 4 firms is strongly preferred.
• Familiarity with R&D credits and Form 6765, including reviewing documentation/substantiation and recognizing when specialist or advisor review is needed.
• Experience in reviewing returns for startups, software companies, engineering firms, product-development businesses, or other clients focused on R&D.
• Prior experience as a senior preparer, reviewer, tax manager, or quality reviewer.
• Experience in reviewing returns prepared by others in a high-volume tax environment.
• Proficiency with Drake Tax or similar professional tax software.
• Experience with remote workflows and tools such as Slack, Google Workspace, Salesforce, and portals.
