Staff Machine Learning Engineer – Recommendations

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Australia.

📋 Description

• You will design, implement, and enhance machine learning models to provide tailored recommendations, addressing the most intricate and unclear aspects of the system.

• You will enhance the architecture, code organization, and efficiency of our machine learning systems, contributing to elevating the engineering quality standard across the team.

• You will explore research papers and cutting-edge machine learning models, determining which are viable for production at Canva.

• You will spearhead the design of both online and offline experiments to assess model performance, making data-informed decisions on what to launch and what to refine.

• You will influence how our machine learning models connect with the larger technology stack, ensuring optimal performance and reliability throughout the pipeline.

• You will collaborate closely with product and engineering teams to roll out new recommendation features, fostering alignment when projects involve multiple teams.

• You will document and communicate your progress to both technical and non-technical stakeholders, including senior leadership, and mentor MLEs through reviews, pairing, and shared knowledge.

⛳️ Requirements

• Extensive experience in developing, deploying, and managing production-scale recommendation systems.

• Expertise in Python and essential ML tools (PyTorch, pandas, scikit-learn, numpy), with a strong focus on the engineering aspects of ML — including training pipelines, evaluation, and serving.

• Strong analytical abilities, with a proven history of thoroughly assessing model performance and making data-driven decisions on what to launch and what to improve.

• Exceptional communication skills, with the capacity to convey intricate technical concepts to a diverse audience, including senior leadership.

• A collaborative approach and a passion for working with cross-functional teams to achieve common objectives, including fostering the growth of MLEs around you.
