Senior Software Engineer – Spatial Analytics, Open Formats

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Spain.

📋 Description

• The Analytics Toolbox framework. Influence how spatial analytics is structured, versioned, and integrated into partner engines — especially when the consumer is an LLM agent instead of a UI.

• Partner-engine SQL strategy. Each engine has its unique dialect, optimizer, and idioms. You will establish the direction for how CARTO writes once and operates universally, maintaining warehouse-native performance.

• The Iceberg / open-format initiative. CARTO organized the pivotal 2021 meeting with BigQuery, Snowflake, Redshift, and Oracle that initiated GeoParquet, and created RaQuet for raster in Parquet. Iceberg is next. You will determine the spatial-first Iceberg vision — for CARTO and the broader ecosystem.

• Community and standards engagement. This work is conducted transparently. OGC working groups, the Cloud Native Geospatial community, FOSS4G, conference presentations, RFCs. You will represent CARTO externally and contribute to advancing the standards.

• AI as a native execution surface. Agentic GIS is the future direction. The Toolbox is more than just a SQL library — it serves as the foundation for AI agents to interact with. You will help define that interface.

⛳️ Requirements

• You have dedicated a significant portion of your career to the cloud-native geospatial domain. You have experience with — and ideally influenced — various tools such as DuckDB, GeoParquet, STAC, Arrow, Iceberg, point cloud formats, MobilityDB, or similar. You don’t merely use these tools; you have insights into their future.

• You possess SQL expertise at the engine level. You can interpret execution plans across BigQuery, Snowflake, Redshift, and Databricks, and you have a clear understanding of what each performs well and poorly for spatial workloads — including partitioning, clustering, file pruning, pushdown, and cost.

• You seriously engage with AI. You have launched LLM-powered features in production, worked with agentic patterns, and possess a perspective on how this evolution impacts analytics.

• You are an active member of the community — whether through a FOSS4G or CNG presentation, a maintained OSS project, participation in a standards working group, or blog posts that are frequently referenced. This visibility is essential for the role.

• You are a humble technical leader. You influence direction through sound reasoning and persuasion rather than loudness. You provide constructive feedback in PRs, ask insightful questions when uncertain, and elevate the engineers around you.

• You are adept at delivering production code — this role is not solely for architects — in a cloud-native, serverless environment (GCP or AWS). Experience with TypeScript / Node.js is advantageous since that is our backend, though it is not the primary criterion for hiring.
