Senior Medical Science Liaison – Gene Therapy

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Massachusetts.

📋 Description

• Identify, develop, and sustain collaborative partnerships with healthcare providers (HCPs) and key external experts such as KOLs and academic institutions to become a reliable scientific partner.

• Deliver timely, audience-specific information and updates to enhance the understanding of the scientific and medical significance of Orchard’s programs. This involves collaboration with Market Access, Government Affairs, Diagnostics, Patient Advocacy, Clinical Development, and others.

• Maintain training documentation and provide training updates to ensure all personnel in assigned Qualified Treatment Centers are adequately trained in accordance with Orchard’s SOPs and the latest Product Manual.

• Create a territory profile that includes Centers of Excellence, key areas of expertise, newborn screening strategies, influential leaders, and market access pathways to inform medical strategy and tactical planning in conjunction with our Commercial, Diagnostic, and Patient Advocacy partners.

• Collect insights from the field on data, therapeutic areas, and competitive intelligence to inform company strategies and evidence generation plans.

• Develop a comprehensive operational understanding to ensure excellence in execution while balancing risk management in accordance with all governance processes.

• Review and oversee Investigator-Sponsored Trial (IST) requests and Early Access Program (EAP) requests during the internal review process, including any follow-up information requests.

• Foster effective internal partnerships through communication and collaboration across the organization with teams from Medical Affairs, Patient Advocacy, Public Affairs, Clinical Development, Clinical Operations, Technical Operations, Market Access, and Commercial.

• Ensure adherence to internal and external regulatory and legal guidelines.

• Maintain clinical, scientific, and technical expertise in the relevant therapeutic area.

• Formulate strategic initiatives to support departmental objectives from a field medical excellence viewpoint.

• Successfully manage at least two large cross-functional projects, showcasing leadership and collaboration skills while effectively overseeing geographical responsibilities.

• Actively pursue and demonstrate successful peer coaching of fellow team members.

• Create US field resource materials tailored to specific stakeholder groups, disease states, and technologies.

• Offer strategic insights by maintaining expertise in the therapeutic area and related fields to effectively convey scientific insights and support strategic goals.

• Keep track of the competitive landscape for advancements and trends in the therapeutic area, including new treatment strategies and therapies, competitive products, and provide feedback to internal stakeholders on competitors' specific initiatives.

• Serve as a peer leader to mentor and coach new or junior MSLs, assisting with onboarding, training, and field excellence.


⛳️ Requirements

• Advanced Scientific / Healthcare Degree (PhD, PharmD, MD, NP, DVM, CGC or similar preferred; RN, MS, or similar with significant experience considered).

• Minimum of 5 years of experience in a scientific, clinical, or MSL role within the biotech or pharmaceutical sector.

• Extensive experience as an MSL supporting post-approval commercial products in the field.

• Ability to lead and inspire team members without a direct reporting line, including coaching and mentoring colleagues.

• Proven track record of successfully establishing relationships with healthcare provider thought leaders and extended clinical care teams to become a preferred point of contact and trusted resource.

• Understanding of US government and industry guidelines, regulations, and laws for the compliant exchange of scientific and clinical information with external stakeholders.

• Relevant experience and knowledge in one or more key therapeutic areas: hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, gene therapy, and neurology/genetics (neurometabolic genetics preferred).

• Experience in creating and delivering effective scientific educational materials and programs for multistakeholder/multispecialty audiences across various disease states.

• Strong knowledge and established network within healthcare providers and industry experts.

• Proficiency in both spoken and written English.

• Excellent communication and presentation skills to clearly convey complex clinical and scientific information.

• Strong interpersonal skills and awareness of both inward and outward emotional intelligence.

• Ability to apply technical expertise and solutions to diverse and individualized situations.

• Proven experience in achieving results, generating ideas, and influencing outcomes through collaboration in a fast-paced environment.

• Highly capable of building close working relationships with cross-functional partners.

• Growth mindset – naturally curious, proactive in staying informed about key scientific developments and building understanding of the assigned territory.

• Valid US Driver’s License and a clean driving record.

• Willingness to travel frequently (75%), often overnight.
