• Join a 24x7 on-call rotation to support all services managed by the Database Engineering teams.
• Play a vital role in shaping the technical vision for database engineering, focusing on the maintenance and cloud migration of both relational and non-relational databases utilized at Marqeta.
• Assist in designing high availability and disaster recovery solutions for database architecture.
• Engage in initiatives that encompass platform architecture, database partitioning, sharding, and the ongoing evolution of the database landscape to facilitate business growth.
• Prioritize automation by ensuring that designs are closely integrated with various automation processes to minimize manual tasks.
• Collaborate with engineers from diverse teams to realize both short- and long-term technical objectives.
• Conduct root cause analysis, implement remediation strategies, and document efforts to effectively reduce incidents.
• Produce clear design documentation and communicate technical decisions and trade-offs to peers and stakeholders.
• Contribute to monitoring and alerting practices utilizing tools like Datadog.
• Mentor junior engineers and help establish team standards.
• A minimum of 5 years of experience as a backend engineer, along with a Bachelor's degree. Alternatively, 7 or more years of relevant experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
• Proficient in cloud-native databases (AWS preferred), including transactional RDBMS such as Aurora, MySQL, and Postgres, as well as NoSQL databases like DynamoDB or MongoDB.
• Experience with cloud-based high availability, disaster recovery, and distributed systems, including replication and failover mechanisms.
• Familiarity with Infrastructure as Code (IaC), automation, and orchestration tools (e.g., Terraform, AWS Step Functions).
• Proficient in CI/CD processes, including pipelines, job runners, and deployment automation.
• Strong understanding of database administration, including internals, query tuning, indexing, and performance metrics.
• Proficient in Python programming.
• Experience with Linux commands and shell scripting.
• Knowledgeable in monitoring and observability tools, preferably Datadog.
• Demonstrates a strong sense of ownership—actively following through on tasks, raising issues proactively, and taking accountability for work.
