Lead Android Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Establish the technical vision for Future’s Android applications.

• Oversee Android development across mobile and Wear OS applications.

• Create onboarding experiences, coach messaging, scheduling features, guided workouts, progress tracking, health-data integration, and video-call functionalities.

• Develop accessible user interfaces utilizing Jetpack Compose and Future’s design framework.

• Enhance architecture, module boundaries, data ownership, navigation, and offline functionality within a modular Kotlin codebase.

• Direct integrations with Wear OS, Health Connect, heart-rate data, sensors, and manage the Android device lifecycle.

• Take responsibility for app startup times, responsiveness, media playback, foreground services, background tasks, real-time communication, and data synchronization.

• Analyze crash reports, performance metrics, release data, and telemetry to identify issues.

• Set standards for code quality, testing, observability, and maintainability.

• Optimize Gradle builds, GitHub Actions, Fastlane automation, and Google Play distribution.

• Lead technical planning, project execution, design discussions, collaborative coding, and code evaluations.

• Utilize AI coding tools to assist in exploration, implementation, testing, and reviews.

• Collaborate with product, design, backend, and iOS developers on a compact senior team.

• Mentor and assist fellow engineers.

⛳️ Requirements

• 8+ years of professional experience in Android engineering, including responsibility for complex consumer applications.

• Profound knowledge of Kotlin.

• Strong proficiency with Jetpack Compose, coroutines, Flows, dependency injection, and Android lifecycle management.

• Proven experience in leading architectural initiatives in a large or modular Android codebase.

• Familiarity with launching and maintaining applications on Google Play.

• Understanding of performance metrics, offline capabilities, background execution processes, media playback, permissions, and device variations.

• Expertise in testing at unit, integration, UI, and end-to-end levels.

• Capable of debugging across UI, networking, data persistence, services, devices, and continuous integration.

• Experience in managing complex projects from planning through to launch, while overseeing scope, dependencies, risks, and delivery timelines.

• Proven ability to operate at a leadership level.

• Familiarity with AI coding tools and the ability to verify their outputs.

• Passion for health, fitness, and effective coaching.

• Attention to interaction quality, accessibility, performance, and product intricacies.

• Capability to make architectural decisions based on product requirements and operational limitations.

• Proactive in raising concerns and proposing solutions.

• Skillful in sharing context, soliciting feedback, and fostering the growth of engineers.

• Ownership throughout the product discovery to production support cycle.

• Nice to have: Experience with Wear OS or Wearable Data Layer.

• Nice to have: Familiarity with Health Connect, health sensors, or Bluetooth technology.

• Nice to have: Knowledge of HIPAA and regulations surrounding health products.

• Nice to have: Experience with Media3, CameraX, foreground services, or real-time audio/video functionalities.
