Head of Machine Learning – Fraud & Risk

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in California.

📋 Description

• Oversee the Fraud & Risk Machine Learning division, leading a team dedicated to the development of production fraud detection models.

• Create and implement the machine learning strategy focused on fraud prevention, identity verification, and risk assessment.

• Develop and expand a range of production ML models from initial concept to deployment and ongoing enhancement.

• Collaborate with Product, Engineering, Risk, and Executive Leadership to address intricate business challenges through machine learning solutions.

• Manage the complete machine learning development process, which includes: Feature engineering, Data preparation, Model development, Validation, Production deployment, Monitoring, and optimization of model performance.

• Set standards for model governance, experimentation, and reliability in production.

• Guide and nurture a high-achieving team of Data Scientists and Machine Learning Engineers.

• Offer technical leadership while also being able to engage in hands-on contributions when required.

• Communicate technical strategies, business implications, and model performance metrics to executive stakeholders.

⛳️ Requirements

• 7–15 years of experience in Applied Machine Learning or Data Science.

• 4+ years of experience in leading and managing Machine Learning or Data Science teams.

• Demonstrated success in developing and scaling production machine learning products within high-growth startup settings.

• Experience in leading teams that manage ML systems critical to the business.

• Strong software engineering capabilities, particularly in production-level Python development.

• Extensive experience throughout the entire machine learning lifecycle: Feature engineering, Model training, Model evaluation, Production deployment, Monitoring, and Continuous improvement.

• Domain knowledge in one or more of the following areas: Fraud Detection, Financial Risk, Identity Verification, Cybersecurity.

• Proven track record of overseeing multiple production ML models rather than managing a single, isolated project.

• Excellent leadership, communication, and stakeholder engagement skills.

• Ability to effectively convey technical concepts to executives and cross-functional teams.
