This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

• Directly manage and mentor the Data and Clinical Integration teams, providing ongoing, constructive feedback and conducting performance evaluations to encourage professional development.
• You recognize the distinction between good and exceptional performance and know how to elicit greatness from your team members, including when to challenge, redirect, or manage upwards and outwards.
• You understand when and how to advocate for the addition of new team members or skill sets that would enhance the department's capabilities.
• Actively engage in the recruitment, interviewing, and retention of high-caliber engineering talent, collaborating with fellow managers to promote team engagement and foster a positive company culture.
• Advocate for the implementation of modern, AI-enhanced engineering practices within both teams by assessing new tools, establishing responsible usage guidelines (particularly concerning PHI), and continuously elevating productivity and quality standards.
• Collaborate with engineering and product leadership to refine and execute the technical strategy for transforming EHR clinical data into reliable, query-ready data that demonstrably reflects health outcomes.
• Manage shared roadmaps and interdependencies between the two teams, as Integrations is responsible for the initial step of the clinical data pipeline that Data builds upon.
• Partner with Product to enhance insight generation from our clinical data by combining AI/ML methodologies with human analysis, while ensuring trustworthiness and compliance.
• Stay closely connected to the solutions and, when required, take a hands-on approach by communicating through prototypes or coded example applications, addressing critical questions using SQL or other technical tools.
• Remain informed about emerging technologies and industry trends, advocating for best practices within the department; review and collaborate with engineers on technical specifications to guarantee excellence in execution.
• Collaborate closely with Product and Design to conceptualize and define impactful solutions, often through the creation of Product Requirements Documents (PRDs).
• Skillfully lead and facilitate team rituals such as Kickoffs, Retrospectives, and Tech Debt Reviews, and work cross-functionally to comprehend estimates and prioritize the backlog, making pragmatic trade-offs.
• Develop processes, tools, and systems that improve the overall effectiveness of the department.
• Contribute to the team by participating in the On-Call (PagerDuty) rotation.
• Proven Track Record: A minimum of 5 years of successful experience as an Engineering Manager overseeing Integration and/or Data Engineering teams in two or more early-to-growth-stage remote startup environments.
• Strategic Leadership: Demonstrated capability to lead and deliver long-term technical projects across multiple teams, achieving measurable results.
• Technical Proficiency: Strong technical expertise with a profound understanding of SQL, data concepts, pipelines (ELT), and cloud data warehousing.
• Modern & AI-Assisted Engineering: A history of adopting contemporary development practices and utilizing AI-assisted tools (e.g., Agentic coding, harnesses, and LLM-based workflows) to enhance engineering velocity and quality, with the discernment to apply them responsibly within a healthcare/PHI context. You actively mentor your teams to integrate these tools into their daily workflows.
• Hands-on Experience: The ability to engage with SQL and data tooling as needed. (While this is primarily a management role, you should be equipped to assist in addressing key data inquiries and removing obstacles for the team.)
