Database Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Implement and manage cross-region replication for various services, including Aurora MySQL Global Database, DynamoDB Global Tables, DocumentDB Global Clusters, Cassandra multi-DC topology, ElastiCache / MemoryDB / Valkey global datastore, Neptune Global Database, and OpenSearch cross-cluster replication.

• Codify all processes using Terraform (or CDK).

• Develop the observability layer for monitoring replication health, including lag metrics, consistency checks, alarm thresholds, and automation of runbooks. Utilize Datadog as the primary observability stack while using CloudWatch as the baseline.

• Create and execute failover and failback runbooks, conducting game-days with AWS Fault Injection Service, and measure and report on RTO and RPO targets.

• Implement KMS cross-account replication, establish IAM service principals for replication roles, and devise a strategy for secrets and parameters concerning region-local dependencies.

• Assist in data extraction from monoliths into microservices by constructing CDC pipelines (DMS, DynamoDB Streams, Kafka Connect, Debezium), ensuring data integrity, and managing the cutover sequence for individual extractions.

• Collaborate with application engineers to abstract connection strings, develop retry and idempotency patterns, and ensure graceful degradation during regional failovers.

• Draft design documents and runbooks for the client team to manage after the engagement.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 5 years of experience in production database engineering on AWS, with hands-on involvement in at least one of the following: payments, banking, brokerage, or similar financial-services workloads.

• Extensive production experience with at least two of the following: Aurora MySQL, Cassandra, DynamoDB, ElastiCache (Redis or Valkey), DocumentDB, Neptune. Familiarity with at least two additional services is required.

• Practical experience with cross-region replication in a production setting, including configuration of Global Database, Global Tables, multi-DC Cassandra, or similar, along with handling failure modes such as replication lag spikes, split-brain risks, and version-skew issues.

• Proficient in Terraform (or CDK), capable of building a multi-region module from scratch and explaining the associated trade-offs.

• Knowledgeable in CDC tooling (DMS, DDB Streams, Kafka Connect, or Debezium) and the operational challenges (schema drift, ordering guarantees, replay).

• Understanding of Linux, fundamental networking concepts (VPC, Transit Gateway, peering, DNS), and proficiency in IAM / KMS.

• Excellent written communication skills and the ability to operate within a regulated client environment.

• Experience in large-scale Cassandra multi-DC operations (nodetool workflows, repair strategy, tombstone management, cross-region anti-entropy).

• Familiarity with AWS MSK or Kafka MirrorMaker 2 for cross-region event replication.

• Experience with Datadog Database Monitoring and custom CloudWatch metrics.

• Possession of AWS Database Specialty or Solutions Architect Associate / Professional certifications.
